Betty Barker Obituary

Betty Barker, 98, passed away Friday, February 13, 2026, at Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center in Hillsboro, ND.

Betty L. Barker, age 98, of Hunter, ND, died peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center in Hillsboro, ND, where she had resided the past 6 months.

Betty Lucille (Quittschreiber) Barker was born on July 19, 1927, in Arthur, ND, the oldest daughter of Fred and Gladys (McClannahan) Quittschreiber.  She graduated from Arthur High School and attended Moorhead State College, where she received a teaching certificate.  She taught in rural Cass County schools until she married Harmon Barker, Gardner, ND, in 1947.  They lived and farmed in Gardner for several decades.  A strong and smart businesswoman, Betty worked in retail at Block 6 in Fargo, ran her own trucking company, worked for H & R Block, and started her own tax company, which she ran until her retirement in 2015.  In 2002, she moved to Hunter to care for her mother.  She continued to live in her home in Hunter until the fall of 2025, when she moved to the Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center, where she received excellent care.

A lifelong dog lover, she was fortunate to have two great dogs, Tyler and Maggie, as companions in her later years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Gladys Quittschreiber; her sister, Doris Barker; and Harmon Barker.

Betty is survived by two sons:  H. Gaylon (Carla J. Meier) Barker, Brooklyn, NY; and David A. (Pam) Barker, Hawley, MN; four grandchildren: Megan (Scott) Bauer, Barnesville, MN; Christopher (Jessie) Barker, Brooklyn, NY; Shannon (Patrick) Kirby, West Fargo, ND, and Paul (Jenna Lucking) Barker, Portland, OR; and 8 great-grandchildren:  Riley, Decklin, and Carson Bauer; Lucas and Alexandre Barker; Spenser, Preston, and Willow Kirby.

Her family thanks the many groups and individuals, including members of the Agassiz Valley Human Services, the medical team and staff of the Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center, and HIA Hospice for their wonderful and supportive care.  And a special thanks to her wonderful neighbors and friends who visited so often and gave Betty special care while she was still at home.  They all enhanced her quality of life by treating her with respect and dignity.

Private graveside servics will be held later in the Hunter Cemetery, Hunter, ND.
