It is with deep sorrow and grateful hearts that we announce the passing of Bert Young, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of the Lord, who was called home on May 10th, 2025, at the age of 70.
Born on January 17th, 1955, in Fargo, ND, Bert lived a life rooted in faith, family, and farming. From his earliest days, he worked the land with humility and purpose, knowing each day given was a gift from God to be used and not wasted. For Bert, farming wasn’t just a job—it was a calling, a way to honor God through stewardship of the earth. Bert attended NDSU and married Roberta (Radcliffe) in 1982. Wouldn’t you know the date coincided with the Winter Nationals in Pomona CA, a great place for a honeymoon! If you knew Bert, you knew his love of fast, well-tuned cars. Many kids know more about motors and cars because they knew Bert. His love of racing and cars established lasting friendships with many.
Bert was a man of persistent strength, known for his unwavering integrity, stubborn spirit, and deep love for the Lord. His faith guided every step of his life, from racing down a quarter mile track to long nights planting seeds to being an incredible model of a God-fearing man for his children. He led by example, living out his beliefs with steady conviction. You always knew where you stood with Bert; he never minced words.
Above all, Bert cherished his family. He was a deeply thoughtful family man, who found joy in simple moments—gathering around the kitchen table, sharing stories after a long day, and watching his grandchildren grow. His cooking was unmatched, and he was never happier than when his growing family came together on the farm for home-cooked meals. He was often found smiling and quietly taking in the chaos and requesting feedback on his meals – a little pinch of this, a little pinch of that was always needed in his mind because no dish was ever perfect; although, it always was. No meal was complete without the added, “I hope it’s edible.” His love for his family was deep, steady, and unconditional.
Bert is survived by his patient wife, Roberta; his children, Dustin (Kaylie) Young; Alison (Chris) Frueh; Anne (Paul) Meyer; Isaac (Petra) Young; and his grandchildren, Zoey, Piper, Sawyer Young; Spencer, Bristol, Ruby Frueh; Oliver Meyer; Alice Young, who were the absolute joy of his life; his father-in-law, Robert Radcliffe; his siblings, Grant Young, Dora Wayne, Lana Weber and their spouses. He also has a few “sons,” not by blood, but in his heart.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Bethany Jo; his parents, Kent and Arlene Young; mother-in-law, Doris Radcliffe and his brother, Paul Young. He will be deeply missed and remembered always for his faith, his work ethic, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
A prayer service celebrating Bert’s life and faith will be held on May 16, 2025, at West Funeral Home in Casselton with visitation beginning at 6:00, service at 7:00. The funeral will be held at West Prairie Free Lutheran Church in Kindred on May 17, 2025, at 11:00am.
