Bernice Peihl

Bernice A. Peihl, 99, died August 26, 2026 in the care of Sanford Hospice.

Bernice was born June 25, 1927, in Mose, ND to Nellie and J.W. Jonhson, the 4th of 7 children. They lived in Mose until a tornado destroyed much of the small town. They then moved to Greenfield where her father managed the local elevator. While working for a neighboring farm family, she met her future husband, A.J. (Lon) Peihl. They were married April 7, 1947. They lived in Hunter, ND, where Bernice was a stay-at-home mom until 1964 when she went to work at Security State Bank.  She retired first in 1992 and then a second time after she went back “to help out” for several years.

Bernice was very involved in her community. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Hunter Senior Citizens where she served at treasurer, Hunter Hunterettes Homemakers, and Hunter American Legion Auxiliary where she served in multiple officer positions over the 70+ years she was a member. While busy with work and family, she still found time to sew hundreds of quilts and stuffed animals which she shared with family, friends and individuals from all over the country who ordered special items. At the time of her death, she was still making blankets that she donated to charities and her great granddaughter’s day care.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 5 sisters/brothers-in-law, Harriet/Clarence Sandbo, Helen/Ove Sandbo, Judith Johnson, Irene/Howard Plum, Katherine/Robert Petrie and 1 brother, James Johnson, brothers-in -law, Robert and Harold Peihl. She is survived by her children, Lois (Kenneth Ewertz), Jim (Erik Stahl), Mark (Gloria) Peihl and Larry (Vicki) Peihl, sister-in-law Ruth Johnson, 6 grandchildren, Matthew Ewertz, Nathan Ewertz, Jenny Silbernagel, Nick Peihl, Jessica Hill, and Tiffany Pflugrath, 12 great grandchildren, Maren, Rebecca, Zach and Landon Ewertz; Hunter and Carter Silbernagel; Broderick, Quinten, Wesley, Sage, Talen and Kaiser Hill, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 10:30, First Presbyterian Church in Hunter, with visitation 1 hour preceding the service. Her family asks that you dress in bright colors to remember her. There will be no interment as Bernice has bequeathed her body to UND Medical School.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you consider memorials in Bernice’s name to Sanford Hospice, Hunter Cemetery, Hunter American Legion Auxiliary, or Community of Care, Arthur.
