Barbara Ann (Hitz) Lies, 93, of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo.
Barbara Ann Hitz was born October 12, 1931, in New Rockford, ND, to George and Annie (Schaefer) Hitz. She grew up on a farm in Bremen Township, ND, along with her sister Helen and brother Louis, where they attended Bremen School #2. She graduated from St. James Academy in 1951. On October 12, 1953, she married Donald Herman Lies at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bremen. They took over his parents’ farm near Bremen, where they raised 4 children, Jo Ann, Randy, Jennifer, and Lee Ann.
While in the farming community, Barbara was active in homemakers and craft clubs. She taught CCD at St. Joseph’s Church where she belonged to a circle and a bible study group.
In 1988, she began to work outside the home as a dialysis aide, a nurse’s aide at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, and an RT at the 4th Corporation Group Home. In 1995, Barbara and Donald moved to New Rockford and joined St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where she became a member of the St. Agnes Circle and taught CCD. Barb worked at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd until her retirement in 2010.
Barbara enjoyed crocheting, crafting, gardening, reading, fishing, and spending as much time as possible with her grandkids.
Donald died in 2009 and, in 2010, Barb moved to Fargo to be near family.
Barbara is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann (Al) Berg, Fargo, ND and Jennifer Lies, West Fargo, ND; 4 grandchildren, Robin (Weldon) Roberts, West Fargo, Charles "Chuck" (Stacy) Berg, Alvarado, MN, Dustin (April) Berg, Villa Rica, GA, and Brendon Lies, Saarbrücken, Germany and 9 great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Weston, Wren, Olivia, Allison, Gracelyn, Winston, Naima, and Imani. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by spouse, Donald Lies, 2 children, Randy Lies, Lee Ann Lies, parents, George and Anna Hitz, sister, Helen Soroka, and brother, Louie Hitz.
Memorials are preferred to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.
Funeral Mass: Friday, September 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in New Rockford, ND, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Interment: St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bremen, North Dakota.
