Annetta Roorda was born October 6, 1925 on the family farm near Ypsilanti, ND. Annetta was the eldest of six children born to John P. and Hilda Lengkeek Roorda. Annetta died on January 24, 2020 at the Spearfish Canyon Healthcare Center, Spearfish, SD where she had lived for approximately two years. She was 94 years old. After attending school in Barnes County, ND, Annetta helped care for the children of family and friends and worked at the Holland Home where her grandfather, Arie Lengkeek, had retired to.
In July 1950, Annetta began her 50 year career as a beautician working at DeLendrecies on Main Avenue, Fargo. She worked there for many years before opening Annetta’s Beauty Salon in her home at 1520 3rd Ave. S., Fargo. She continued her in-home beauty salon services when she moved to 1628 15th Street S., Fargo until she retired in 2000. Annetta’s clients held a special place in her heart and she affectionately called them her “Ladies.” Every Christmas season she would show her appreciation to her “Ladies” by serving them coffee and her homemade Christmas cookies.
Annetta married Dean (Ike) Hansen of Hunter, ND on June 30, 1955. They welcomed a daughter, Karol Annette and later a son, Allen Dean.
Annetta and Dean enjoyed their yearly vacation of a week-long MN lake cabin rental. Among the MN Lakes they enjoyed were Prairie, Marion, and Rush. They particularly enjoyed spending that time through the years with Dean’s sister, Lorraine Chan and her husband Robert (Bob) Chan and their family. Every Sunday spent at the “Lake” included inviting all of Dean’s family to the lake for a family potluck. Later on in their marriage, Dean and Annetta enjoyed mini-vacations with Annetta’s brother, Perry Roorda, and his wife Dorothy. Annetta enjoyed making huge holiday meals for all the extended family. Her gravy was never lumpy and her pie crust was always flaky! When living in Fargo, Annetta was actively involved with the Calvary United Methodist Women’s Circles holding many offices throughout the years. Here too, she enjoyed being involved in the many food events that the United Methodist Women would put on.
After Annetta was blessed with grandchildren, first Peter and Daniel, then Benjamin and Matthew, she enjoyed attending their school and sports events. In 2001, Annetta and Dean moved to Rapid City, South Dakota to be close to son Allen, wife Conni, and their children, Benjamin and Matthew to continue to share in their young grandchildren’s lives. Annetta showed her appreciation for all her grandchildren’s school and sport accomplishments by using their school/sports t-shirts to make them each a quilt for their high school graduation. She continued her love of quilting by making each of her five great-grandchildren a quilt, made herself quilted wall hangings, and lap robes for Veterans while living at Somerset Assisted Living in Rapid City, SD.
Annetta is survived by her daughter, Karol (Bill) Cossette, Fargo, ND and son, Allen (Conni), Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Peter (Betsy Stadick) Cossette, Fargo, ND, Daniel Cossette, Eagan, MN, Benjamin Hansen, Tucson, Arizona and Matthew Hansen, Sioux Falls, SD; great-grandchildren, Corinne, Grant, and Reid Cossette, Fargo, ND and Audrey and Louis Cossette, Burnsville, MN. Also surviving Annetta are her brother Perry Roorda, Valley City, ND, brother Arnold (Joyce) Roorda, Jamestown, ND, sister, Marie VanDyke, Jamestown, ND and sister, Julia (Lyle) Heim, North Little Rock, AR.
Annetta was predeceased in death by her parents John P. and Hilda Lengkeek Roorda, husband Dean (Ike) Hansen, and sister Rena VanDyke.
