Shirley Ann Johnson

Shirley Ann Johnson, age 76, of West Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, ND.

Shirley Ann Wallington was born November 4, 1941, at Grand Forks, ND, the daughter of William and Katherine (McGowan) Wallington.  She lived there until the age of 8 when the family moved to Fargo.  After the death of her father, her mother married Ingvald Birk whom became a second father to her.  She graduated from Shanley High School in 1960.

Shirley was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Johnson on August 6, 1960 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fargo.  They lived in Fargo where she raised their family and also had a home daycare.  They moved to West Fargo in 1974.  Shirley began working at M&J Steak House, then started at Ben Franklin Store, and later Larson Super Value for many years.  Shirley worked at Sun Mart on 13th where she was known as the “Play Room Lady”.

Her family remembers her great smile, that she believed in hard work, and that she was a great cook who loved to cook for others.  She loved her “small” 300+ piece Department 56 Snow Village collection!  Shirley enjoyed watching Sprint Car races,  which was a long-time activity for their family.  She enjoyed reading, gardening, and raising flowers, especially tulips.  Shirley was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Shirley is survived by her husband Bob; their children: Kimberly (Harry) Bullis, West Fargo, Kathleen (Lonny) Vigen, Mapleton, ND, Caroline (Scott) Erickson, Fargo, Karen Johnson, Litchfield Park, AZ, and William (Dana Flanders) Johnson, Hudson, WI; 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, two siblings: Mary (Richard) Curtis, Fargo, David (Mary) Birk, Centennial, CO; two sisters-in-law, Roberta (Cary) Wetzstein, West Fargo, Susan Johnson, Perham, MN, and many special nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, William, Katherine and Ingvald; and two sisters, Cheryl Wegner and Darlene Nelson.

Her family would like to thank the wonderful caring staff at Maple View Memory Care, and also at Sanford Health Palliative Care.

Visitation:   Sunday, April 22, 2018, 5PM – 7PM, with a Prayer Service at 7PM, all in West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND

Funeral Mass:   Monday at 11AM in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Fargo

Burial:  Holy Cross North Cemetery, Fargo, ND
