Ruth Viestenz, 87, Arthur, ND died on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
Ruth Leona Schlenvogt was born on a farm near Mott, ND in Hettinger County to William and Leona Schlenvogt, on Feb. 26, 1931. She was the fifth child, with a deceased sister and three older brothers. She attended school in Mott, graduating with honors in 1949. As a young girl, she was active in 4-H, Rainbow Girls and numerous church activities. She taught Sunday school and played piano for church. She attended NDSU in Fargo, ND for two years, where she met Howard Viestenz. They were married on June 24, 1951 in Mott, ND.
They made their home near Arthur, ND where they farmed for many years. She served as a 4-H leader for 13 years. Her church was always a main stay in her life and she showed her faith by serving where it was necessary. She held a variety of offices in the women’s organizations, sang in the choir and served on the church council at St. John Lutheran. While on the church council she served as president, being the first woman to hold that honor. Howard passed away in 1993 and she later moved into Arthur.
She is survived by Laura (Terry) Dakken, Hebron, ND, Dean (Cheryl) Viestenz, Fargo, Ray (Shelley) Viestenz, Eagan, MN, Diane (Dennis) Palowski, Fargo, Todd (Diane) Viestenz, Erie, ND; 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Orval, Warren and Glenn, grandchildren, Andrew Dakken, Daniel, Michael and Jason Viestenz and great grandchild, Christian Dakken.
Visitation: Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 from 5 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at West Funeral Home, Casselton, ND.
Funeral: Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 10 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, Arthur with visitation one hour prior.
Burial: Arthur Cemetery.
