Ruth M. Opp, 91, of Fargo, ND, formerly Hunter, ND died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019 at Elim Care Center in Fargo.
Ruth Elaine Martin was born at home on a farm near Hunter, ND to Clarence and Chloie (Jepson) Martin on Aug. 3, 1927. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Hunter High School in 1945. She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ at the Hunter Methodist Church.
Ruth married Rudy Opp on Nov. 5, 1945. Together they raised 4 children. They lived in several locations before moving back to Hunter, ND. Ruth and Rudy spent 20 years in Grand Forks, ND where Rudy owed a mechanical contracting company called Opp & Peach. Ruth worked as a counselor at the Council for Drug and Alcohol Abuse. She also worked with Rudy at Opp & Peach. Upon retirement, they moved back to the farm, where Ruth grew up, near Hunter. They moved to Fargo in 2008. Rudy passed away in 2011, and Ruth moved into assisted living at Edgewood Vista in 2016.
She is survived by 3 of her 4 children, Rita Barnard (Dave Shepherd) of Moorhead, MN, Roberta Brekke of New Braunfels, TX and Rod (Karen) Opp of Brainerd, MN; She is also survived by 6 of her 7 grandchildren, Jeff (Mona) Johnson, Jason (Betsey) Johnson, Joel (Lateesha) Johnson, Dustin Opp, Chloe (Mike) Baker and Lexie Opp (Taylor Stockert); She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Candace, Drew, Ryder, Tucker, Sawyer, Alex and Parker Johnson and Martin Baker.
She was preceded in death her parents, Clarence and Chloie Martin, brother and sister-in-law, Ray Martin and Joan Martin Larson, husband Rudy Opp, son Roger Opp, and grandson Casey Opp.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Edgewood Vista, Essentia Hospital and Elim Care Center along with Hospice of the Red River Valley, for helping Ruth maintain her quality of life during the time spent with each of them.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on June 6 , 2019 at 6 pm with visitation from 4 to 6 PM.
