Margaret Sumpter

Margaret Marie Sumpter of Kindred, ND passed away July 23, 2018 at Essentia Health Hospital, Fargo, ND.  

She was born on August 21, 1926 on a farmstead in rural Mapleton, ND to her parents Edward and Helen Johnson.  Margaret went to school in Mapleton and helped her parents on the farm. She married Floyd E. (Sparky) Sumpter, Jr. on January 2, 1947.  They moved to Virginia where he was serving in the Navy.  They returned to Fargo after service where Margaret and Sparky had 3 children, Danny, Sheri and Rhonda.  The family moved to California for a few years where they had their fourth child, Vicky.  They returned to Fargo to be closer to family and friends.

Margaret and Sparky built a cottage on Lake Eunice to spend their summers while the children were young. They moved to West Fargo to their home on Francis Street where all four kids went through school and moved on to their pathways of life.

 Margaret enjoyed cooking, gardening, snowmobiling and even played on a bowling league but her real passion was music and sewing.  She worked as a drapery seamstress and decorator for deLendrecies and Gill Drapery.  Sparky and Margaret built two new homes south of West Fargo after the children were grown. A few years later, they bought a beautiful home overlooking Lake Lida.  Margaret and Sparky could sit and watch the water from their living room or sit out on the porch and enjoy life to its fullest.  Margaret and Sparky shared their love with both dogs they named Fonzee, after their beloved granddaughter, Shawn.  Winters were often filled with traveling to south Texas and escaping the cold.

In recent years Margaret and Sparky reside in Kindred, ND where they have enjoyed friends and family.  She loved to travel south to the casino to try her luck on the penny machines.  Her hobbies continued to be sewing and music.  Margaret played piano, accordion, harmonica, guitar, and steel guitar.  Her gift of music which she shared with her siblings is found in her family tree, Sheri and her children and Danny’s daughter, Ashley.  When not playing music, she was always sewing, making quilts or crocheting slippers and towels.  She has gifted a multitude of embroidery towels and quilts to all who loved her.  She has now gone to be with the Lord and we will see her again one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Helen Johnson; siblings, Walter, Jimmy and Donald Johnson and her granddaughter, Shawn Kuhn.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Floyd “Sparky” Sumpter, Jr. of Kindred, ND; children, Danny (Denise) Sumpter of Vergas, MN, Sheri (JJ) Schmidt of Detroit Lakes, MN, Rhonda (Mark) Kuhn of Kindred, ND and Vicky Laramee of Lipan, TX; grandchildren, Ashley Knecht, Jesse Schmidt, Charmaine English, Misty Metcalf, Mary Erdmann, Tracy Dalman, Kimberly Rosene, Brooke Rogers and Leslie Laramee and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service:              Friday, July 27, 2018 at 11 am at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Interment:                          Maple Sheyenne Cemetery, rural Harwood, ND.
