James D. Stewart died peacefully in Eventide on June 27, 2019, in Fargo, North Dakota at the age of 86. James is survived by his wife, Donna (Schrank) Stewart, his children, Cheri (Kevin) Flanagan, Diane (Elwyn) Krogh, James H. (Jan Ulferts) Stewart, and Debra (Neal) Sundet, all of Fargo; his brother Robert, Grafton, North Dakota; eleven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Charles and sister Jean Larson.
James Stewart was born on February 20, 1933 in Drayton, North Dakota to Herbert and Segre (Carlson) Stewart. He graduated from Drayton High School in 1951 and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake. He married Donna Marie Schrank, his school sweetheart in September of 1951. His children remember him as a kind and patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. James began working in the lumber business in Grafton, North Dakota, Middle River, Minnesota and Hallock, Minnesota. The family moved to Carrington, North Dakota in 1967 where James worked in banking and insurance. After retirement, Jim and Donna moved to Fargo and spent their summers at their home on Cotton Lake.
Jim was accomplished at cycling and cross-country skiing and competed at the state, regional and national level. He was also an excellent marksman and competed in pistol, small bore and high-powered matches. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren at their family lake home. He was an active and dedicated member of Grace Lutheran Church in Carrington and later Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Fargo.
His Funeral is scheduled for 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Fargo, with Visitation held one hour prior to the service. There will be a reception to follow at the church. Pastor Chris Wadvogel will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim’s life.
