Hazel (Huus) YokomApril 8, 1923 ~ January 8, 2018 (age 94)
Hazel L. Yokom, 94, West Fargo, died Monday, January 8, 2018, at Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo.
Hazel Luella Huus was born April 8, 1923, near Hatton, ND to Herman and Louise (Lukkasson) Huus—all proud Norwegians.
Hazel graduated from Hatton High School and Mayville State Teachers College and then taught in North Dakota elementary schools for five years. On June 6, 1948, she married Henry Yokom and became involved in family, church and community life in Mapleton, ND. Hazel loved people and being active in Homemakers, Presbyterian Women, Missionaries, Sunday School and Bible School. She was involved in planning the Mapleton Centennial in 1996 and the Church Centennial in 1980. She and Henry moved to Fargo in 1997 after Henry retired, but she did not slow down. There were family genealogies to work on and lots of people to deliver treat baskets to on holidays and birthdays. Birthdays were celebrations in Hazel’s world. She loved the piano and with her gifted ability to “play by ear” she simply adjusted the key so everyone could sing along. Hazel’s dream would’ve been a family band. Her music will be missed.
Hazel is survived by her husband and children: Beverly (John) Lovas, Richard (Rosanne) Yokom, Sharon (Rhett) Dacus, Larry (Beth) Yokom, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.
Memorial Service: Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 3:00 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND with visitation one hour prior to the service.
