Eugene Gust “Pooch” Christl was born on August 27, 1933 in Valley City ND to Emil and Hermine (Hanusch) Christl. They first lived on a farm near Lucca ND, then moved to Casselton and later to West Fargo, ND.
In 1953-54 he was in the US Army as a Corporal in communications stationed in Germany. After his discharge in 1955, he went to work for the Union Stockyards in West Fargo, spending a 44-year career as a livestock buyer, capped by opening his own hog buying business.
In 1957 he married Bonnie Highness in Aberdeen SD. They lived in West Fargo their entire married life (62 years). Of this union three children were born, Michael (Sherry) Christl, Brian (Donna) Christl, and Cheryl (Trent) Crowe all of West Fargo. Five grandchildren: Amy (Eldon) Johnson, Stacey (Corey) Herlickson, Cydney (Nick) Barth, Curtis (Lauren) Crowe and Emma Christl. And eight great grandchildren: Jacob Christl, Isaac K. and Clara Johnson, Isaac M. and Abigail Herlickson, Everett and Maisey Barth, and Axel Crowe.
Eugene passed away peacefully October 6th, with family present, after a short hospitalization, from a fast- moving illness.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie, sisters-in-law, Helen Christl, Mary Lou Christl, and Beth (Jack) Achter. Pooch was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and stepfather, Archie Wahowske; brothers, Clarence and Ernest Christl, and sister, Irene (Jay) Groce and brother-in-law Earl Highness.
Always busy, Eugene volunteered at Bonanzaville for 20 years, taking care of the antique automobile museum as well as other jobs. He helped friends maintain their Ford Model A’s, owned a black coupe himself, and was a member of a Model A Club. Afternoons, you could often find him at Sunmart having a cup of coffee with his friends, the Model A parked out front.
His passion was machines and engines and he could diagnose most engine issues by listening with a cocked ear along with woodworking and making gifts for his grandchildren..
