Ervin Schmidt

Ervin F. Schmidt, 81, West Fargo, ND peacefully passed on to his eternal home on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo, ND after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Erv was born on October 23, 1936 in Tappen, ND to Fred and Ida (Roemmich) Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm and in June of 1958, Erv joined the US Army.  After a short time of active duty, Erv was honorably discharged to help out on the family farm when his dad became ill.    Ervin met the love of his life, Darlene  when he was a patient and she was his nurse at the Jamestown Hospital.  They married on October 14, 1961 in Jamestown, ND.  Together they raised three children.  He worked for Melland’s in Jamestown until they moved to Fargo.  Erv worked for Steiger Tractor in Fargo for 14 years and then for the rest of his career at FedEx.  After his retirement he went to work for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He called this his “Hobby Job”.

His greatest joys in life were getting together with his beloved family and watching his grandchildren grow up.  He was very proud of each of them and loved them dearly.  He loved to travel and was always looking forward to his next trip. He enjoyed camping, fishing, conversing with people “A stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet”; each conversation lasted a long time.  He was also a “Jack of all Trades” and was always “Going to Work” because there was always projects to get done.

Erv is survived by his children: Deb (John) Elsbernd, Denver, CO and their children Tyler, of  Dickinson, ND and Ashley, of Denver CO; Mike (Michal) Schmidt, Glyndon MN and their children Carter, Gavin and Harper; Brenda (Lindell) Heupel, West Fargo, ND and their children MiKayla, Samantha & Matthew; brother David (Mary Ellen), of Gilette, WY, and sister Linda (David) Besette, of Tower City, ND.

Erv was preceded in death by his wife Darlene, parents, stillborn brother Rueben Schmidt, brother Robert Schmidt, sister Darlean Sipe, granddaughter Angie Fernandez, and brother-in-law Clinton Sipe.

Visitation: Sunday, April 29, 2018 from 5 until 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo.

Funeral Mass: Monday, April 30, 2018 at 2 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, West Fargo with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Burial: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery South, Fargo, ND.
