Donald D. Muhs, 86 of Argusville, ND passed on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at Ecumen Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Don was born September 19, 1931 to Charles and Alfreda Muhs of Amenia, ND.  He attended grade school and high school in Amenia where he was a standout basketball player.  Upon graduating from high school in 1950, he entered the Navy serving aboard the USS Randolph Aircraft Carrier.  On September 17, 1954 he married Mildred (Taves) Muhs and they moved to Norfolk, VA while he completed his military service.  They returned to North Dakota where Don attended Valley City State Teachers College. He completed his teaching degree in three years and then moved to Napoleon, ND where he was a teacher and coach for 7 years.  In 1965, they moved back to the Fargo area where he attended NDSU pursuing his graduate degree while teaching at Argusville.  In 1966, Don took over superintendent duties at Argusville and spent 28 years there until his retirement in 1992.  After his retirement they moved to Fargo for a few years and then in 2008 they moved to their lake home on Lake Melissa near Detroit Lakes, MN.

Don is probably best known for his basketball skills.  In high school he led his team to the state tourney his junior and senior year; in the Navy, he earned all-Navy honors; at Valley City State he was selected three years all conference, but probably his greatest fame was in North Dakota amateur basketball.  In his over 20 years of amateur basketball he was a legend.  It is estimated that he played in over 800 games averaging close to 30 points a game.  No wonder he was called the “Greatest Scorer in ND" by Ed Kolpack of the Fargo Forum.  He also was an accomplished basketball coach winning over 300 games.  He is inducted in the Valley City State University and the North Dakota Amateur Basketball Hall of Fames.

He is survived by his wife Millie, Detroit Lakes, MN; daughter Barbara (Jan Bosma) LeDoux of Fargo, ND; son Steven (Meredith) Muhs of Fargo, ND; daughter Tamara (John) Kinzler of East Grand Forks, MN; son Jeffrey (Angelica) Muhs of Fargo, ND.  Don has 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a brother, Robert Muhs.

Don was preceded in death by five siblings, Evelyn Iwen, Charles Muhs, Margaret Blixt, Charlotte McConn and Allen Muhs.

The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to the staff of Ecumen Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes for the loving care and kindness of our husband and father during his stay there.

Memorial Service:  Friday, Dec. 1, 2017 at 2 PM at First Congregational United Church, Fargo, ND with visitation one hour prior.
