Claude H. Gilleland, 91 of Fargo, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo.
Claude Herman Gilleland was born on September 5, 1928 in Statesville, NC to Claude and Lillie (Troutman) Gilleland. He grew up Statesville and graduated from Celeste Henkel High School.
Claude served in the US Army during both the Korean War and Vietnam War. While in the Army, he met and married Jeannette Powers in Tokyo, Japan. They lived in numerous locations while serving their country and eventually settled in Jessup, MD following Claude’s retirement from the Army. While living in Maryland, Claude worked for Southern States Co-op for many years as a maintenance supervisor. After Jeannette’s death in 2005, he traveled in his motorhome all over the US and spent many winters in Florida before moving to Fargo in 2014.
Claude enjoyed traveling in his motorhome and serving as park host at various motorhome parks in Virginia and North Carolina, visiting with friends and family and reading. He was a member of American Legion Post #66 in Bowie, MD, Howard Masonic Lodge #101 in Elk Ridge, MD, the Scottish Rite and most recently the DAV in Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeannette and siblings, Monroe, Rose, Kelton, Ruby, Troy, Charlotte, Betty, Slade, Geraldine & Mott.
Claude is survived by his children, Larry (Barb) Gilleland of Fargo and Kathy (Mike) Fisher of Mount Airy, MD; grandchildren, Janel (Brandon) Laufenberg, Keri (Cody) Krueger, Michael (Amy) Fisher and Krystal Fisher; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Gilleland and brother-in-law, Robert Wolfe.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Memorial Service: Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 4 pm at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Final Resting Place: Maryland State Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
