Benjamin Luther Keen, age 65, died April 4th, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND. Ben was born to Rev. Marvin & Marlys Keen on September 2nd, 1953 in Columbus Ohio. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grove City, Ohio. He was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Beach, ND. Ben graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo in 1971. Ben joined the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Chowanac, stationed in San Diego, CA. where he served until his honorable discharge in 1977. Ben married Laura Quiel in 1977, later they divorced. He was part owner and manager of the Country Kitchen in Grand Rapids, MN. Ben married Mary Noll in June of 1997, and they later divorced. In 1984, Ben became the owner of Country Kitchen in Grand Rapids. Ben lived in Grand Rapids until his health started to decline and he moved to the VA Hospital in Fargo.
Ben always wore his heart on his sleeve, he helped friends in need, and he enjoyed life to its fullest. He had a special love his cat, Asia, who didn’t leave his side, they were very devoted to each other. If you visited Grand Rapids, you would often find yourself on Lake Pokegama on Ben’s houseboat, to watch the sunset or the sunrise.
Ben is survived by his mother, Marlys (Keffeler) Keen of West Fargo, ND; 3 sisters and 1 brother: Jeannine (Jim) Wilcox, Buffalo, ND, Dan (Loretta) Keen, Huxley IA, Ramona (Jerome) Gunderson, Thompson, ND, Sharon (Scott) Wellendorf, Independence MO. Also by his Nieces and Nephews: Tara, Tanya, Emily, Eric, Jordan, Corinna, Jaymee, Rebecca, Jana, Macy & Ian.
Ben was proceeded in death by his Father, Marvin Keen, and niece, Sarah Gunderson to whom he was a Godparent.
A special mention to all the nurses and professionals that work on the CLC Community Living Center at the VA hospital in Fargo. You not only provided excellent care but you were mentors and special friends to Ben, you were his angels. The level of professionalism and compassion you gave Ben and other individuals you work with was exceptional. You are HEROS to Ben’s family and we can never thank you enough.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the VA Hospital in Fargo.
Celebration of Life: 2 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the West Funeral Home Chapel in West Fargo.
Visitation: An hour before the service.
Burial: Horace Lutheran Cemetery, Horace.
Military Rites: US Navy Funeral Honors Team & VFW Post #7564, West Fargo.
