Myrtle “Kit” Shimota, 86, of Fargo, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Rosewood on Broadway.
Kit was born March 15, 1932 in Minneapolis, MN to Frank and Myrtle Thissen. Her early years were spent on farms near Janesville and Blooming Prairie, MN.
After graduating from high school, she continued her education, earning degrees from Mankato State, the University of Minnesota and a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. Kit taught from 1948 (Yes 1948, age 16) to 1991. Her career was varied – Steele County Minnesota rural school, to Madison, WI public schools. She was a creative, talented teacher.
Kit was married to Ken Shimota in 1955. They moved from Madison, WI to Fargo in 1991. Kit’s interests outside of teaching were singing and acting in plays. Kit also had an avid interest in politics and investing.
Kit is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Ken; and brothers: Frank, Philip and Herman.
She is survived by siblings: Mollie and Don MacEachern, Mary and Mike West, Chris and Jan Thissen; sisters-in-laws: Barbara Thissen and Milly Thissen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and wonderful friend and cousin: Elaine Burns.
Memorial Service: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2018, Rosewood on Broadway Chapel, Fargo, ND
Interment: Buffalo Cemetery, Buffalo, ND
