Esther Hummel Obituary

Esther K. Hummel, 91, West Fargo, ND, died Thursday, March 15, 2018 in Sanford Health Palliative Care.

Esther Katherina Stadel was born December 30, 1926 to Jacob and Anna Marie (Opp) Stadel in rural Kidder County, ND near Glueckstal Lutheran Church. Esther was baptized on January 3, 1927 at the family farm. At about 10 months, she moved to Marsh, MT. Five years later, the family moved back to North Dakota south of Dawson where she attended school in Peace Township.

Esther was confirmed July 5, 1942 at Peace Lutheran Church in Napoleon, ND.  At the age of 17, Esther assumed the responsibility of raising her two younger sisters, Edna (age 5) and Hilda (age 2), when their mother passed away. Esther married Albert Hummel on June 28, 1953 at Peach Lutheran Church in Napoleon, ND. They farmed south of Dawson where they raised their three sons.

In the fall of 1969, the family moved to West Fargo. Esther was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ruth Circle, taught Sunday School, and helped at many functions until her health caused her to slow down. Mom’s faith in Jesus Christ was strong. She regularly read the Scriptures, enjoyed Bible Studies, and prayed for her family. In addition to raising her family, mom worked part-time nearly 20 years in the West Fargo School lunch program at South Elementary.

Mom will be remembered for many things, including her hospitality. Coffee and desserts were ready when visitors arrived. She also was an excellent cook. Mom made the best kuchen. She enjoyed gardening and had a natural gift for growing flowers.

Esther is survived by her sons, Larry, Bradenton, FL; Gary, West Fargo; Myron (Dawn), West Fargo. Her grandchildren; Jammie (Kara) Hummel, Shakopee, MN; Miranda (Jeron) Udean, Burnsville, MN; Santana (Paul) Huppe, Melbourne, FL; Andrea (Tommy) Butler, Fargo, ND; Alyssa (Luke) Poppel, Watford City, ND; and Rachel (fiancé Joshua Tovar) Hummel, El Paso, TX. Her great-grandchildren; Jacek Hummel, Rock Hummel, MyAnne Udean, Kaylyn Udean, and Lydia Butler. Esther is also survived by her brother, Dr. Emil Stadel, and two sisters, Hilda Thurn and Edna (Alex) Feist, her sister-in-law Arlene Ackerman as well as many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, her parents Jacob and Anna Marie, her sister, Bernice Stadel, her brothers & sisters-in-law, Rueben & Josephine Hummel and Clifford & Frieda Hummel.
