Dorothy M. Moum, 91, of Casselton, ND, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017, at Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo.

Dorothy Mae was born on June 2, 1926, in Arthur, ND to Walter and Hazel (Townsley) Iwen.  She was the oldest of five sisters and had an older brother.  She went to Ball country school through the 7th grade; she rode her horse to the school at the end of the 7th grade and took the 8th grade final exam at her teacher’s suggestion, passed it and went on to graduate from Arthur High School when she was 16.  She immediately began college at Mayville State Teacher’s. By attending summer session, the next full year and the next summer session, Dorothy was able to earn her Standard Teaching Certificate and take her first teaching job in Erie, ND, when she was 18 years old.  Later she would earn her BS degree in education from Valley City State College.

Dorothy taught one year in Erie and then began teaching in Absaraka, ND.  It was there that she met Allan Marshall, who was just home from serving in World War II.  They were married on October 6, 1946, and moved to their farm east of Absaraka where they would live their entire married life.  They raised three daughters Myra, Ryma and Brenda there.

In 1963 she took a long term subbing job at Wheatland elementary school and the next year began teaching 1st and 2nd grade full time.  She eventually added elementary principal duties to her teaching job.  She retired from teaching in May, 1975.

After Allan died of cancer in October, 1975, Dorothy moved to Casselton and began working for the North Dakota Farm Bureau.

Dorothy married Harold Moum on January 5, 1979, and they moved into the home they built just south of Ayr.  In 1995 they moved into Casselton.  Dorothy was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in November, 1980 and served for one term.  Dorothy and Harold began spending winters in Mesa, AZ in the mid 1980’s.  Sun Valley Villas became their second home and Dorothy was the unofficial welcome committee to newcomers.  Harold passed away in Mesa in January, 2004.

Dorothy was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Arthur.  After she and Allan were married she became a member of the Absaraka Methodist Church.  She was currently a member of the Casselton Methodist Church.

She is survived by her three daughters: Myra (Ron) Anderson, Keene, ND; Ryma (Dennis) Meier, Wheatland, ND; Brenda Marshall (Valerie Traub), Manchester, MI; four grandsons: Marshall (Carrie) Anderson, Ladera Ranch, CA; Ryan (Gina) Anderson, Stillwater, MN; Mike Meier, Chicago, IL; Kevin (Amy) Meier, Casselton, ND; and six great-grandchildren, Ava & Drew Anderson, Taylor & Jordan Anderson, and Molly & Jack Meier.  She is also survived by three sisters: Myra Garland, Klamath, OR; Arlis Fuller, Casselton, ND; and Marge Mergner, Mesa, AZ.

Memorials may be given to the Casselton Ambulance Fund, the Salvation Army, the Dakota Boys’ and Girls’ Ranch or the charity of your choice.
