Donald R. Mergner, 80, of Mesa, AZ formerly of Arthur, ND, died Friday, October 20, 2017, at Mayfair Gardens in Mesa.

Don and his twin brother Duane were born June 16, 1937 in Hunter, North Dakota to Ed and Myrtle Mergner. Don went to Tonn Country School until the schools' closure and then transferred to Arthur.  Don attended Wahpeton College and graduated with a mechanical degree. Don and Duane started farming with their Dad before they entered into High School.  He was then drafted into the Army.  When returning home, he received his pilot's license.  Along with farming, Don became a crop duster.

Don married Marge Iwen-Hoeft on February 2, 1990 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Casselton.  Don and Marge moved into Don's grandparents homestead.  They spent winters in Mesa, Arizona and travelled back and forth from Mesa to farm Country.  In 2015, Don's Alzheimer's made it impossible to travel.

Don is survived by his wife Marge;  2 stepsons:  Kris Hoeft (Kathy), & Kevin Hoeft (Katrina); grandchildren: Josah and Susanna Hoeft:  three sisters: Elaine Hansen, Fargo N.D., Lucille Matthey, Sergeant Bluffs, IA., and Marian Watson, Chandler, AZ; many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by, his parents: Ed and Myrtle Mergner;  his twin brother: Duane and a sister: Lois Meyers.

Celebration of Life:    4 p.m.  Friday, October 27, 2017 at the West Funeral Home Chapel in Casselton, ND with visitation an hour prior.

Burial:  Arthur Cemetery, Arthur, ND
