Obituary Image

Donald Harry Grage passed away on June 10, 2017, at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND. He was one of those “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” guys, gracious and stubborn, with a strong moral compass. He will be sorely missed.

Donald Grage was born to Harry and Elvina Grage on April 19, 1932 on his grandmother’s farm outside of Grandin, ND. He attended school through 8th grade at Dows Township and graduated Hunter High School.

Don served in the US Air Force serving from 1951-1955 and held the rank of Staff Sergeant with flight duty on a B-36-D. Following military service Don entered Mayville Teacher’s College, receiving a B.S. in Social Studies with a minor in Geography.

Don loved learning. At Simle Junior High in Bismarck, where he taught for 31 years, he and his students were twice recognized with top awards at the National Geography Olympiad, an honor he held close to his heart for the rest of his life. A curious mind, his shelves were filled with books, from maps of the world to military history to scripture. He could hold forth for hours on a wide variety of subjects. He loved the outdoors and to hunt and fish, and in the end, loved to drive his scooter around town to check out construction projects or visit the university campus.

He was known for his generosity, to his alma mater, Mayville State University, and to people in his community who needed a helping hand. He leaves behind many students, friends, and extended family who were all touched by his strong character.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Darryl, his sister Dolores (Dolly.) We hope their reunion in heaven is sweet and music-filled. He is survived by his brother Dennis Grage of Haywarden, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family is filled with gratitude for his friends, both residents and staff, at the former Good Samaritan Home in Arthur and the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. You are amazing.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 7 to 9 PM with a 9 PM prayer service at West Funeral Home Casselton.  Funeral will be Thursday, June 15 at 10 AM at First Lutheran Church, Hunter with visitation one hour prior.  Burial will be at the Hunter Cemetery following the service.
